Can Europe Run the 21st Century?
Date: Thursday 6 October 2005
Time: 6.30pm
Venue: Hong Kong Theatre, Clement House
Speaker: Robert Cooper
Responding to one analyst’s controversial prediction that ‘Europe will run the 21st century’, one of the European Union’s most senior officials asks whether Europe has the will and the means to do so.
Robert Cooper is director-general for external and politico-military affairs at the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union.
Global Risk: how civil society responds
Date: Thursday 6 October 2005
Time: 6.30pm
Venue: Old Theatre, Old Building
Speakers: Professor Lord Giddens and Professor Mary Kaldor
What do terrorism, climate change, migration and the tsunami have in common? Myriads of people around the world were touched by them. How people responded depended on their perceptions of risk, shaped in part by the many individuals, movements and NGOs whose campaigns reach beyond state borders and domestic policies.
Professor emeritus Lord Giddens is a former director of LSE and currently based at the Centre for the Study of Global Governance. Professor Mary Kaldor is director of the Centre for the Study of Global Governance.
An event you don’t want to miss. We take a gorgeous boat ride along the Thames all the way to Westminster, and then to the Thames Barrier. Lots of food, 2 free drinks, a beautiful night out and a great chance to meet your fellow Butler’s Wharfers. Pick up your free ticket in the common room beforehand (see posters for details). Ticket’s go fast so be sure to get yours.
